Gluten Free Amsterdam: 10 Must Visit GF Restaurants

Heading to Amsterdam and looking for some delicious gluten free food for your next trip? You’re in the right place! Eating gluten free in Amsterdam is both easy and delicious if you know the right spots to hit up. I had the most amazing time visiting gluten free Amsterdam restaurants as someone with Celiac and am excited to share all these fantastic finds!

When I visited Amsterdam, I was travelling with friends that are not gluten free so it was important to me to find restaurants that would not sacrifice their experience to eat delicious gluten-filled food but also would keep me safe. For this reason, most of the places on this gluten free Amsterdam list are not 100% gluten free but vetted extensively to make sure they take cross contamination and Celiac disease seriously.

With all that said, after having spent a few food-filled days in Amsterdam, I’ve put together a list of the restaurants and bakeries that I would highly recommend for your next visit!

Restaurants

The Burger Room

Have you ever been to a restaurant that is a cross between a burger bar, the Wizard of Oz, and a gluten free safe haven? Probably not, which is what makes The Burger Room in the Museum District of Amsterdam so unique! Walking in, you are greeted on the “yellow brick road” into the main dining area that is decked out to make you feel like you are sitting in the center of Emerald City.

The burger-forward menu is themed to the restaurant as well, with options like “The Scarecrow” and “Back to Kansas”. They have a fantastic allergen guide that shows which burgers are gluten free, though the waiter said they could customize a number of the other burgers to be gluten free as well by swapping out ingredients.

The restaurant is conveniently located across the street from the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum making it a great option for before or after your museum visit. Though I recommend paying a visit to The Burger Room even if you aren’t going to the museums!

Dèsa

Gluten free Indonesian food in Amsterdam at Desa

Did you know that Amsterdam is known for having fantastic Indonesian food? Given The Netherland’s colonial history with Indonesia, the cuisine has risen to be one of the most popular and delicious food offerings in the city. It can be difficult to find a place that does safe, gluten free Indonesian food in Amsterdam, but I was fortunate enough to find Dèsa which checked both of those boxes!

Immediately upon entering Dèsa, I felt like I was stepping into another world between the Indonesian decor, the waft of delicious Indonesian food, and homey feel to the small restaurant. The menu encourages family-style ordering, which involves a tasting of a number of different Indonesian foods that are brought out all at once. This can be done completely gluten free! They even brought out a gluten free appetizer before the meal!

The restaurant is tucked away in the neighborhood of De Pijp and is perfect if you are looking for a calm, cozy vibe.

Black Olive

Digging some Mediterranean cuisine? Great service? Chic atmosphere? Black Olive is ready to deliver all three! While the restaurant is not entirely gluten free, most of their menu is Celiac safe and every dish I tried was fantastic!

What made my experience at the Black Olive so incredible was the overly kind and attentive staff. They went out of their way to ensure I felt safe ordering each dish by walking me through their protocols. They even gave us a complimentary gluten free dessert and limoncello shot at the end of our meal! What more can you ask for?

You can find the Black Olive on the east side of city center, very walkable from many sightseeing spots.

Pizzeria Bella Roma

Gluten free pizza in Amsterdam at Pizzeria Bella Roma

As a pizza enthusiast, I can’t visit a city without trying at least one pizza. Located just a few blocks away from Centraal Station is Pizzeria Bella Roma right in the heart of the city and an excellent stop to add to your gluten free Amsterdam list.

All of the pizzas can be made gluten free at a small additional cost. After having visited Italy a couple years ago and trying some of the most delicious gluten free food in Rome, Florence, and Venice, my expectations are always high at an Italian restaurant, but Pizzeria Bella Roma delivered! Highly recommend grabbing a pie while in the city.

Koh-I-Noor

Gluten Free Indian food in Amsterdam at Koh-I-Noor

If you are in the mood to spice things up a bit (pun intended!), head over to Koh-I-Noor for some of the most delicious gluten free Indian food you can dream of. I’m always wary trying different cuisines as someone with Celiac, but the staff were very helpful and the menu was well marked to understand what was gluten free.

I ended up getting the Chicken Birriani which turned out to be one of my favorite gluten free Amsterdam meals of the trip! In addition to the chicken birriani, there are a ton of other options on the menu that are gluten free. They even brought out a gluten free bread alternative at the beginning of the meal.

Koh-I-Noor is conveniently located just a few blocks from the Anne Frank House in the canal district.

Blushing

Located next door to The Burger Room in Museumsplein is Blushing, an adorable restaurant perfect for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. With a health-forward menu, you can get anything from eggs, to acai bowls, to salad bowls and more.

What stood out to me most about this restaurant was the decor on the interior. It is boasting with ornate mirrors, chandeliers, florals and greenery in every corner of the establishment. You will feel like you are walking into a lavish garden party in the center of Amsterdam!

Loulou Pizzabar

Gluten Free Amsterdam Pizza at Loulou Pizzabar

Located along a canal just outside city center sits Loulou Pizzabar, a cozy Italian restaurant serving gluten free pizzas. They’ve developed a unique gluten free pizza base derived from pea, rice, and corn flour that they import directly from Italy.

While I had a fantastic meal at Loulou, I wouldn’t rank their pizza above Pizzeria Bella Roma, so if you only have time for one- I’d recommend prioritizing Pizzeria Bella Roma. However, if you are in the area or want to try another pizza (like I did!) then make sure you stop by!

Fratellini Amsterdam

Gluten free Amsterdam deli options at Fratellini

Fratellini Amsterdam’s food is so nice that I had to eat it twice! Yes, you heard that right- this is the only gluten free Amsterdam experience that I had to hit up a second time on my stay.

What makes it so special? This is hands down the best deli experience I have had since going gluten free 5 years ago. All of their sandwiches can be made gluten free and they slice the meat fresh (because they are all gluten free!) which I’ve rarely been able to find.

The small, cozy shop is located in the city center within walking distance to Centraal Station, the Anne Frank House, Dam Square, and a number of other major tourist spots.

Quick Eats

Craft Coffee & Pastry

Looking for quick food on the go? Craft Coffee & Pastry in De Pijp is serving some of the best gluten free croissants you can dream up. What makes this place even better? Its 100% gluten free!

Beyond just croissants, Craft Coffee & Pastry sells loaves of bread, a number of baked goods and desserts, and other savory options as well.

Note that the bakery is only open Wednesday through Saturday from 10AM – 4PM so plan your visit accordingly.

Tapi N’ Bowls

Last but not least, is the Brazillian to-go restaurant, Tapi N’ Bowls also located in De Pijp! Known primarily for their delicious flatbreads, Tapi N’ Bowls can make any flatbread gluten free.

There is limited seating at the restaurant, but there are a few tables both indoors and outdoors. But if you are on the run, this is a great spot to grab a quick lunch or dinner before hitting the town!
